Why this tool exists
Counting + Stats keeps copy drafts, transcripts, and release notes honest. Paste once and hand off word counts, character totals, and reading-time estimates to teammates.
Editorial QA
Paste blog drafts or newsletters to confirm word counts and reading time before publishing.
Product updates
Track bullet-heavy release notes and ensure summary blocks stay within platform limits.
Compliance handoffs
Share character totals and line counts with legal or localization teams for approvals.
Quick start
Paste text, submit, and copy the metrics you need for briefs, compliance sign-offs, or SEO handoffs.
- Open Counting + Stats, paste or type your text (or load a preset sample).
- Submit to calculate characters, words, whitespace-trimmed lines, and reading-time estimates.
- Copy individual metrics or use the quick highlight cards for at-a-glance totals.
Supported inputs
- Handles multi-line paragraphs, bullet lists, emoji, and multi-byte characters without stripping formatting.
- Whitespace is preserved in the textarea so you can paste transcripts or log files directly.
- Reading time assumes 200 wpm by default; the assumption is displayed alongside the estimate.
Mode 01
Metric highlights
- Characters: Counts every codepoint, including emoji and punctuation, so social copy limits stay accurate.
- Words: Uses whitespace boundaries; dashed strings like API-compatible remain a single word.
- Lines: Counts newline-delimited rows, calling out that blank separators count when present.
Mode 02
Reading time insight
Reading-time estimates are transparent: we show the WPM assumption and make it easy to describe to stakeholders.
- Reading time rounds to minutes/seconds and surfaces the words-per-minute assumption for transparency.
- The helper text explains how to convert to slower/faster WPM if teams standardize on other values.
- A tooltip clarifies that emoji/ASCII differences don’t impact reading time—only word total matters.
Outputs & samples
Highlight cards, detailed lists, and quick samples keep counts portable. Copy full stats or pull from curated sample drafts to show the team what to expect.
- Highlight cards show the top metrics (characters, words, lines) with quick copy buttons.
- Detailed list includes every metric with localized number formatting and tooltips.
- Copy buttons copy raw numbers by default, while reading time copies the formatted string.
Field notes
Small habits that keep copy grooming quick and predictable.
- Run the tool before sending drafts to clients so everyone references the same counts.
- Use the samples panel to demo longer posts, release notes, or marketing blurbs without retyping.
- Pair Counting + Stats with the Case Converter or Whitespace Utilities when cleaning up copy decks.
- If you need to work backwards from a target reading time, divide the minute goal by the WPM to estimate word limits.
